How To Use A Highlighter To Brighten Your Face

Highlighters were provided in order to review. Full disclosure here.

Highlighters are wonderful make-up tools to use when your goal is a brighter complexion. Highlighters were often used in the past for certain special events. Many times highlighters were applied to models on the runway to catch all the lights. This would create a dramatic effect. Others would wear highlighters for special parties. These were applied to catch the party lights or to look good in spotlights.

But, now we’ve learned how well highlights work for everyday. Used with a different application than for a runway model, highlights used in an everyday make-up face can create a brighter, more energetic look. I know that I could use a highlighter to make me look more energetic.

The use of highlighters on a young face is obviously going to bring out the youthful beauty and glow of healthy skin. Even those of us who are older can receive a great benefit from the use of highlighters.

Most make-up artists recommend using a highlighter that is two shades lighter than your foundation or skin tone. Jolie Beauty has many types and shades of highlighters. Highlighters are not the same as a bronzer or contour. They should be two shades lighter to bring a subtle sheen to cheekbones or other areas of the face.

When you are ready to try a highlighter, you should follow the correct steps in applying. After you apply foundation and concealer, then you are ready for highlighting. To get a more natural highlighting look, you’ll want to skip the glittery highlighters. You can purchase a shimmery highlighter that doesn’t contain glitter.

If you really want to shine and are going to an event with spotlights, a glittery highlighter will really allow you to shine. But, for a glowing face, you can use the non-glittery highlighter. There are many different places on your face to try highlighting.

Cheekbones are probably the most common place to apply highlighter. You would want to add the highlighter to your cheekbones after you have applied the contour and blush make-up. The cheekbones would then shine.

Makeup brushes

To apply the highlighter on your cheekbones it will look much better if you use the correct tools. There are highlighting brushes, but you can also use a blush brush or a kabuki brush. After you get the highlighter on your brush, tap it gently to remove the excess. Then, brush it across your cheekbones. If you need more, just repeat this step. It’s better to start with a small amount. Because you can always add more.

Another place to add highlighter is on the bridge of the nose. Often, for a fully made up face, contour will be used to accentuate a certain part of the nose. Other’s use contour to slim the nose. The highlighter would be applied after the contouring step. The key to using highlighter on the nose is to use a very small amount.

Highlighter can also be beautiful in the eye make-up area. One place to brighten the eyes with highlighter is the inner corner of the eye. After your other eye make-up is applied, highlighter can be added just outside of the inner eye. On the skin next to the inner eye, use a eyeshadow make-up brush to apply a small brush stroke.

Using highlighter here can really make your eyes pop! Then, take the same eyeshadow brush and add a swipe of highlighter on the brow-bone. This can make the eyes appear more wide-open and will add that little touch of shimmer.

Enjoy experimenting with highlighters, and have a wonderful time like I have with cosmetics from Jolie Beauty.
