Summer Ice Cream Recipes

Don’t scream! There is plenty of ice cream to go around. Summer is hot and ice cream is cold, so that pretty much says it all. We fall in love with ice cream when we are small children and never stop this love affair. Summer ice cream recipes bring us that feeling we had as children, when we make our own ice cream at home. There’s nothing better than homemade ice cream. We know exactly what ingredients are being used, and we know that it’s fresh. The beauty of homemade ice cream is that there are so many varieties available. You can even create your own blend of flavors. Don’t be limited by the supermarket stock. Ice Cream Memories I remember growing up with a love of homemade ice cream. My parents had an ice cream maker with a hand-crank. Making ice cream with this was a big job and even the children had our part. After the ice cream base was cooked on the stove-top, the ice cream maker had to be filled with crushed ice and ice cream salt. My dad would layer the ice and salt until it reached the top. Then, towels were placed on top. Dad would start to slowly turn the crank. We all had to keep helping by adding ice and salt as it gradually melted down. Then, we would be told to sit on top. This pushed the ice cream container down into the ice and salt as it continued to melt. When the crank got too hard to turn, we knew that the ice cream was ready! What an amazing taste! Now, there is no need for hand cranks because of the electric models. But, however you make your own ice cream, you and your family will appreciate the extra work to create this delicious and sweet treat! 5 Top Summer Reading Programs For Kids

Wanting my children to be avid readers, I tried to set a good example for them. Every summer when I was homeschooling my children, the summer time meant no more textbooks. Summer fun included fun reading. It was the best time to grow a love of reading because with summer reading programs they got to pick their favorite books to read. That meant that summer was a busy time at our local library. We went often to turn in books and check out new ones. I always made a big deal about signing up for the summer reading program. There was a big push at the library for signing up and there were prizes and fun every time that we went. Earning rewards for reading was also a wonderful incentive! There are many summer reading programs and clubs to participate in. Often, children will be able to earn a reward, such as a free book. This is a great tool to keep your child’s eye on the prize. Making reading rewards exciting does much to build the worth of books in your child’s mind. Love of reading definitely starts at home. Here are my 5 favorite Summer Reading programs: Local Library Some libraries may still be closed to the public, so you will have to check with your local branch. Libraries are the best because they are free. There’s a never-ending supply of books and the entire family can enjoy finding a great read for the summer. Summer programs include kick-off parties and reward parties at the end of summer. Rewards might be as simple as a book mark, little toys, or a book bag. Check this free resource out and enjoy! Barnes & Noble For grades 1-6, the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading program, offers a free book. Children must read 8 books and complete a Reading Journal. Then, they can select a free book from their summer list. The 8 books can be found at home, in the library, or any bookstore. Scholastic Scholastic Summer Read-A-Palooza wants to make reading fun, and they have set up the summer reading program digitally. This is a great idea during the pandemic, as many children can’t access their local libraries. The program is called Scholastic Home Base, which is a digital destination filled with free full books, live events, and games to encourage lots of summer reading. Books A Million Books A Million offers a Summer Reading Adventure that is similar to Barnes and Noble. Children read 4 books and fill out their reading log. When they bring the reading log back into the store, they will be rewarded with a free Dog Man logo baseball cap. Amazon Summer Reading Challenge is a reading program that works through the Amazon Stores. Children are challenged to read 8 books and keep track of them. When they bring their list into the store by September 2 they’ll receive a Certificate and a $1 off their next book purchase. 13 Best Online Nature Games For Children

The warm days are long and the extended light gives children and parents more time to explore nature. Having children learn by having fun adventures outside expands their minds and brings joy. Sometimes getting children started isn’t easy. Online games can inspire children to help them learn and plan a real nature adventure. While it may seem backwards to start with online learning in order to explore nature, many children prefer online games. If they aren’t naturally inspired to go outdoors for nature play, the ideas from online games can get them excited about taking a nature walk. Here are some great sites that will help your child learn about nature and hopefully will get them enthused about their next outdoor trip: PBS The PBS.org site has so many well designed games and activities for children! There are lots of great nature games that will be fun for your child. Even adults will enjoy the graphics and “lessons” to be learned. There is also a Google App that has these games, too. Central Sierra Environmental Resource Center Children can learn a lot about animal habitats and watersheds, wildlife, and more. There are fun and easy nature activities, too. Sheppard Software This fun site offers games for children of various ages. There are many animal games, habitat games, and food chain games. Kids will love the colorful graphics. Science Kids This site seemed more educational than fun. But, some of these will be great for learning. RSPB I enjoyed the Bird-feeding games. This would be fun for younger children. In addition to the games, there are wonderful activities that children can get involved with. The bird-watching activities look like a fun way for children to join an online group that keeps track of various birds. Duckie Deck You’ll need Flash Player to play these games. The great graphics and bright colors make this a wonderful site for preschool learners. They’ll enjoy the fun times and won’t even know that they’re learning. Turtle Diary There are games sorted by grade level and subject. There were some cute nature games in the Science section. Explore games for your child’s level. Toca Nature This game is really a paid App. You can play on iphone and ipad. It lets the player shape nature and explore land, habitats, and animals. National Geographic Games I love this site because of the quality of the games and activities. There are great photos and brightly colored pages. Kids will really get into these games. Ranger Rick has online games that are fun. This is a subscription service with lots of activities. There is a 3 month free trial offer on the site, so that you can try it for a while and see if you want to pay. NASA has science games and games to learn about the planet, moon, and weather. These games can teach as well as get your child eager to know more about the earth. WhyVille Here children can create their own avatar and then have adventures. Some of the nature places include a reef and they can experiment with building a green structure. ABC Mouse is a learning site that you can join. There are tons of learning games and there is a free 30 day trial period. This high-ranking site offers learning for math, art and colors, science, and reading.
