Modern Standing Lamp From Brightech

Disclosure: Product received in order to review. All opinions are 100% my own. Don’t you love the soft glow of lamps versus the bright overhead lights in your home? With dusk’s appearing, the first thing I do is turn on the lamps around my living room. The softer lighting brings a warmth to evening and helps us all to relax. My new Maxwell LED Brightech Floor Lamp is the most lovely lamp I have. This is the second lamp we’ve reviewed from Brightech and we couldn’t be happier with them both. The first lamp is much bigger and modern, and has held up beautifully (even through our move across the country). This modern lamp we received today is a slim floor lamp with handy decorative shelves. There are three shelves that are useful for small decor items or a few books. The top is a beautiful Asian-style shade which filters the LED bulb, which is included. There is a dainty chain pull chord to turn off the light. It was easy to put together and came with all the necessary parts. The Maxwell works with Alexa and smart home devices, but it needs to be connected to a smart plug to work that way. There are a few versions of the Maxwell: a shorter table lamp, a floor lamp with drawers, and a floor lamp with USB charging ports. This floor lamp is 63 inches high and the square-shape is 10.2 inches. It fits well in small spaces and works well as a night-stand. Using the charging port Maxwell, it would be perfect for charging electronics at night. No matter what room you use it in, the soft warm glow of this lamp will be perfect. My living room is slightly modern/eclectic and the lamp looks amazing in the corner. This contemporary lamp would also look terrific in mid-century, modern, farmhouse, and country rooms. So, if you make changes to your style you’ll be glad to know that this lamp will work. The wood floor lamp comes in a variety of colors and tones. The lamp comes in a classic black color as well as these shades of brown: Havanah Brown, Walnut Brown, and Natural Wood. So, you can find the color that works best with your existing furniture. I believe that you’ll enjoy any of the Brightech lighting products and especially the Maxwell Floor Lamp. They offer a 5-year guarantee on their products and free shipping over $50. We’ll definitely look to Brightech to save money with the LED lamps. Our lamps are going to be enjoyed for a long time in my home. @2020, copyright Lisa Ehrman

Homeschool ACT Prep: 6 Reasons to Ditch the SAT and Laser Focus on the ACT

This post is sponsored by College Prep Science. Copyright 2020 by Greg Landry.  As a homeschool mom of three graduated students, I remember how important it was to prepare my children for college admission testing. It’s necessary to learn all you can and help your child be ready to succeed. I started helping homeschooled students with ACT prep over 14 years ago as I helped our children and then students from other families in classes. Now, more than ever, it makes sense to laser focus on the ACT. Standardized tests like the ACT and SAT are critically important for two reasons – they are an important part of the college admission decision and academic scholarships are often based directly on this score (higher score = more scholarship money). This score may make the difference in a college acceptance decision or in thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships.  First, a little background. Most colleges and universities require that students take either the ACT or SAT and that the score is reported to them as part of a student’s application process. All colleges and universities will accept either test for the application process. Some students take and report both. Since 2012, more students take the ACT than the SAT and that gap widens every year. The SAT is rapidly losing market share. While a majority of students used to prepare for and take both tests, more and more students are now focusing all of their preparation on the ACT and only taking the ACT. The conventional wisdom used to be that you should prep for, and take, both tests. The rationale was that because of the differences in the tests you may score significantly better on one than on the other. Actually, that rarely happens (although my anecdotal experience is that homeschooled students tend to perform better on the ACT). The scores for the vast majority of students who take both tests are very similar. Some would suggest that students should take the PSAT because of the chance of becoming a national merit scholar. But the chances of that happening are very, very small and in my opinion not worth the potential downside except in rare situations. Several reasons I believe students should laser focus (and become an expert) on taking the ACT! 1. Taking only the ACT eliminates the test-taking confusion that many students experience because of the differences in strategy and structure between the ACT and the SAT. A little confusion while taking these tests can negatively affect college admissions and scholarship money – sometimes significantly. 2. Considering homeschooled students I’ve worked with who have taken both tests, the majority preferred taking, and performed better on the ACT. 3. All math questions on the ACT are multiple-choice – a decided advantage for students who know how to exploit this factor – as I teach students to do in my boot camp. Also, unlike the SAT, the ACT allows the use of a calculator for the entire math test. 4. In early 2019, College Board (the publisher of the SAT) announced that in 2020 it will begin including an “adversity index” with the SAT scores it submits to colleges in 2020. This index score will be an estimate of how much adversity a student has faced in their life as estimated by the College Board. This step has been roundly criticized in academic and test prep circles as unfair to students who don’t fit into the “adversity index” – for all practical purposes it acts to effectively lower the SAT score of all other students. Another reason to ditch the SAT. 5. The “science reasoning” section of the ACT (about 25 percent of the test) can be very intimidating. This section has little to do with science knowledge and is more about reading comprehension, critical thinking, and reasoning. For students planning to be science majors in college, doing well on the “science reasoning” section of the ACT is especially important and can give them a decided advantage. It’s also the section that has the largest potential for improvement with appropriate preparation. It is typically composed of several science-related reading passages (often with some type of graphical data) with several questions related to each passage and data. It can be conquered and used toward a student’s advantage with appropriate preparation! 6. If a student focuses solely on the ACT they can become an expert on taking that test. This is much more difficult to do when preparing for both ACT and SAT as you don’t have as much time to focus on ACT. Rather than spending time preparing for the SAT and the ACT, spend all that time totally focused on the ACT, likely yielding a better ACT score. Ideally, a student should begin preparing for and taking the ACT in the 9th grade and take it two to three times per school year through 11th grade or early 12th grade. A student can take the ACT up to 12 times. The fee to take the ACT is $68 (writing test included) and the experience gained in taking it multiple times may make the difference in a college acceptance decision or in thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships. The goal early on is to gain valuable experience of taking the test and to continue to improve.  Then, submit one (the best) of those 11th / 12th-grade scores to colleges to which you’re applying. 99+% of colleges only require that you submit one of your scores. A few colleges require that you submit all of your ACT or SAT scores but state that they use your best score for admission consideration. Also, admissions personnel that I’ve had contact with view taking the test multiple times as a sign of a student’s determination and perseverance – qualities they want to see in a student. The experience of taking the ACT multiple times over several years is so important! Imagine the difference between students who take the ACT for

Fresh Look At The Budget

Welcome to the new year! Each new year brings a fresh start for living. We often want a fresh start for our diet. Many of us think of January 1st as a day when we can have a do-over. My diet is already in motion, but my main focus is to take a fresh look at the budget. As a retired couple, our budget is more important than ever. There are limited resources when the job income stops, so we need to make the most of them. There is always room to improve the budget and there are numerous ways to look at it with fresh 2020 eyes. Categories One of my favorite ways to examine the budget is by looking at each category. As we look at each section, we then analyze individual purchase type and decide if or what we can save. Here are some of the categories that always seem to be flexible: Food – cutting down on eating out or using generic brands and coupons. use apps, cash-back, and rebates to save even more. Utilities – can we lower the temperature by one or two degrees? we can make sure that the dishwasher is full and close the heavy drapes on cold nights. we wash most of our clothes in cold water. Automobile – we drive old cars and keep them well-maintained. plan trips to town, do errands on one day per week (or order online) Housing – if you’re in a rental, are you doing the best you can on pricing? is there a place that you live and save money each month? if you own your home, can you do more of the maintenance yourself? Insurance – this is easy to find comparison prices for. many insurance websites will help you compare prices and switch to a policy that saves you money. Medical – this is the biggest drain on our retirement budget. I don’t yet have medicare, so private insurance and medical bills are a huge drain. we shop for the best deal possible when picking my policy. Investing – make sure that you’re saving for rainy days and the future. retirement comes sooner than you think. Cash Back and Rewards You have no choice but to spend money. You might as well get rewarded for spending it. I use every cash back and rewards program that I can to earn income for the budget. As we just finished the holiday shopping, I’m happy to see all the cash-back and rewards I’ve earned. I use cash-back programs like Swagbucks and Rakuten. My rewards credit cards have also enriched the budget. It’s wonderful to see all the free gift cards! I love the Discover cash-back program and my US Bank cards have great cash-back, too. Personal Spending You’ve already seen how to deal with budget categories. But, we all have our little personal spending wants. We want to make some purchases that seem small, but can add up to be enough to break the budget. Since we don’t want to spend more than we make, these small budget busters need to be addressed. Pampering items – if you’ve decided to cut back on spending, that means everything must be looked at. do you really need that new beauty product? use up what you have before you make more purchases. do you really need to buy that latte? take coffee from home and save money every week. Books – if you love to read, check out the local library. you can even get digital copies now! Manicures – paint your own nails or just go natural Hair – haircuts and styling doesn’t have to cost a fortune. I use Great Clips and save a ton! Save on your Food Budget by using a Meal Planner. Planning meals helps you to save money by only purchasing foods that you’ll need for specific meals. If prevents food waste and allows for healthier eating. What To Do On The Last Days Of The Year

2019 is almost over. There are just a few days left. Actually, a day is just a day. But, symbolically we tend to give great emphasis to the end of a year and the beginning of a new one. What will you want to do on the last days of the year? Do you analyze the year and look forward to ways of improving in 2020? Do you spend time making a list of resolutions? Do you evaluate your goal successes in 2019 or create new goals for 2020? I’ve already seen that some people are posting about their new word for 2020. Personally, I will select goals for 2020. The good things about setting yearly goals is that you have an entire year to reach them. It’s easy to say you’ll do something when there is not an immediate deadline to finish it. Setting goals is a great thing to do, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t adjust your goals throughout the year, if your circumstances change. You may add to the goal or just make a new one, altogether. I prefer to be flexible with things like goals. As long as I’m being honest with myself, it doesn’t bother me to change. I enjoy discussing my new year’s goals with my husband, and sometimes the kids. It helps me to get another persons opinion or input. This can also provide a lot of encouragement. Throughout the year, I sometimes will comment on the goals for myself or my husband. It’s a great way to encourage each other. If hubby speaks encouragement to me, it can really push me forward in my goal progress. We do try to be careful about those dieting goals, because it isn’t helpful if we nag each other. Dieting can be a very touchy subject. My goals for 2020 will include having a focus on simple living. Simple living keeps me attuned to the few important things in my life: God and family. I want to put my focus on people and not things. Helping others is much more important to me than my things or getting new things. What are your plans for the last few days of 2019? Do you plan to do a lot of celebrating? I’ll probably watch a little too much football, but I enjoy it so much. It doesn’t take much energy to do this. My sciatica flare is bad right now, so I won’t be doing much at all. Whatever you have planned, I hope that you will enjoy a simple and joyful end to this year and have many blessings in the year to come! @2019, copyright Lisa Ehrman
