How to Overcome Obstacles to a STEM Education

For children in school, persuing STEM lessons can be the beginning of their being prepared for a much needed and higher paying job. Wait a minute, What is STEM? you might ask. STEM stands for Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. When children start school it would be hard to look at them and see who will be in a STEM field, so it’s important to train them all so they can reach their potential. Students who focus on STEM majors are going into fields that are increasing 24%, which is far above average. There are many wonderful jobs in these areas and my children all fell into a STEM occupation. We homeschooled and had the ability to let them persue their favorite subjects as far as they could in high school. I have a child in computer mangagement, occupational therapy, and math. Many children don’t have the same opportunities that my children had. As an educator myself, I always find it frustrating when every child doesn’t get the same educational opportunities as another. Let’s look at some of the obstacles that children may experience and learn how to help them. As a person with many chronic illnesses, I look to those students who are gifted in the sciences with so much hope. Many diseases have no cures or have poor treatments with terrible side effects. More scientists mean more research and more medical discoveries. So I am a very loud cheer-leader for students going into STEM careers. Low Income Students Students from low-income families enter STEM careers at a much lower rate than others. Often they can’t afford a computer or high-speed internet. They may not have a family that can help them with homework or encourage them. Students from a higher income family usually are taken frequently to museums, science centers, STEM camps, and more. These are so motivating and can inspire a child for life. To overcome the obstacle of being a low-income student, teachers, mentors, and parents may have to be creative to encourage children in STEM learning. A teacher or school counselor can keep track of scholarships that might provide a computer, trips to camps and museums, or more. Many community groups or after-school programs can help students with homework problems. If parents don’t have time to help, a teacher, boys/girls club mentor, or other community mentors may work one on one to give that child the push they need. Myths That Girls Can’t Do STEM I was told as a young girl that it didn’t matter if I could be great in math, because math wasn’t for girls. I was told by teachers in the ’70’s that girls are not smart in math. These types of comments, and many more, took away all confidence to try very hard in math. I decided that I would try to make it in the arts, because that was better for my gender. I ended up doing well in music performance, but never lived up to my potential in STEM. Since then, there have been many years of working to change that attitude. Girls are now being encouraged to participate in Robot Teams, Math Drills, Science Fairs, and so many other things. The girls that want to be doctors or engineers are able to do so. Schools work hard to include girls in all areas, including STEM. Girls and boys will need to be excited at a science fair, an experiement in the lab, learning to code, and more. America’s Low STEM Scores One big obstacle to STEM education is that the US is very low in the order of countries around the world. With low budgets and teacher cuts, bigger class sizes, and lack of aids or mentors, our low scores are going to continue. It takes money to raise a generation of children who are well educated in STEM. In these classes, it’s so important to hire really good teachers. To do this, a higher pay must be offered. In STEM careers, these professionals can make so much more in the prive sector. One way for school counselors to better advise students, they could attend a family medicine conference. There needs to be a budget for up-to-date computers, software, and labs with appropriate resources. Having resources for Robot Teams, Math Drill Teams, money to travel for competitions, smaller classes (which means more teachers), and more. Having parental encouragement is the best type of encouragement, but if it’s not available teachers, aids, after-school helpers can give the personal attention they need. I hope that you’ll be a part of helping to encourage a student in STEM or any path that fits with that child’s passion and gifts. @2022, copyright Lisa Ehrman Resources: EngineeringforKids.com, Forbes, PLTW

How To Make The Most of the Festive Season

Photo by Alex Fu from Pexels: https://www.pexels.com/photo/unlighted-red-advent-candles-on-table-beside-green-gift-boxes-1746191/  The festive season is well and truly upon us and if you’re looking to make the most of it, you’re not alone. Too often, time goes too fast over the Christmas period and it can feel like it passes in a blur. The last thing you want is to feel like you’ve not made the most of it and that you have any regrets. This is why we have put together some top tips to help you make the most of the festive season and ensure you have the best time this Christmas.  Take some time to do nothing When it comes to Christmas, it can be a hectic time of year with you running here, there and everywhere trying to fit everyone into your schedule. While this is all well and good, you also want to make the most of doing nothing. Take some time to just relax with a cup of tea and a book or head on a dog walk. You’ll appreciate these snippets of quiet! Check in with old friends and distant relatives While you might have a lot of people around you, some people might not. Check in with old friends and distant relatives and see if you can help them in any way. If they’ve recently lost someone, offer them a shoulder if they need, or speak to them about funeral arrangements and if you can help in any way. You could advise them on Hilton Funeral Supply Urn Vaults or just lend a hand. This will be appreciated in a tough time of year for them to experience loss. See what markets and events you can head to One of the best things about the season is the number of Christmas events and festive markets you can enjoy both near and far. Check out local notice boards and find out what is going on that you can attend. Whether you go alone, with a friend or with a family member, you are spoilt for choice. It’s a great way to feel festive! Eat, drink and be merry! Last but not least, take this time to eat and drink what you fancy and just make the most of the most indulgent time of year. If you fancy another mince pie, go for it, or you want another sherry (within reason!) why not. It’s one of the best times to just let yourself go and have fun with your loved ones. The diet can wait until January! These are just a few things you can do that can ensure you make the most of the season. Christmas really is one of the most wonderful times of year so you want to get out of it just what you can. Do things that make you happy and take time to just stand back and be in the moment. Time goes quickly so the last thing you want is to be so wrapped up that time passes you by. What are some top ways you can make the most of the festive season? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.

Honeycake with Medea Kalantar Book Tour

This post is in partnership with The Children’s Book Review and Medea Kalantar. My Review Honeycake is the nickname for a sweet little girl named Nala who lives with her loving family. Her two uncles came to take her to a very special day where she would meet some heroic children who were making a great difference in the lives of others with disabilities. Her uncles came to get her and bragged on their sweet niece. They asked her if she would like to visit the event hall where the program would soon start. She was anxious to meet the other children and quickly said, “yes”! Honeycake didn’t live with a disability but was always friendly and welcoming to those who had a disability in their life. She was introduced to bright red hair and freckles. This girl had a congenital disability in which part of her arm didn’t finish developing. She and Alexis talked about her arm and they were very open and transparent. Of course, Nala was accepting of her. Next they met Jake and Traci who both led an exciting and fulfilling life even though they had a phyiscal disability. It didn’t stop them from having fun and being successful. Alexi won an award for being such an inspiring fundraiser to help other kids. After a day like this Honeycake was impressed to start her own club to do great things for others. What a great book that will make us all think about where we fit in on our life’s journey to help those around us. 7 Budget-Friendly Activities To Catch Up With Your Family

A family can be one of the greatest and most valuable things you can have. They are a group of people you spend time with, and how you spend that time can bring you closer, making it important to prioritize family activities. These activities will strengthen your bond, increase your happiness and build your self-esteem. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a fortune to spend quality time doing fun activities. Here are seven budget-friendly activities for your family. Image Credit Everyone loves a good picnic! Well, most people do. If your family is the type that enjoys sitting outdoors with a basket of delicious food, then a picnic would be a good idea. For starters, you would need to choose a family-friendly spot. It doesn’t have to be an expensive spot; it could be a park or a rooftop. You can buy cheap snacks or make sandwiches from last night’s leftovers. A cooler for your drinks will also be a plus, so you can stay hydrated and refreshed throughout the picnic. You can also participate in fun games like board games or a sack race. Don’t forget to pack your sunglasses and sunscreens on a sunny day. Fishing with your family will be a good activity to consider if you are fortunate to live near a lake. It is a great way to unplug from the world and bond as a family. It can also be an opportunity to teach the kids some life skills while basking in nature. All you need is your fishing gear, bait, food, or drinks to create unforgettable memories. Before you go fishing, however, you will need to make a checklist to ensure you have a fun and safe fishing experience.  Movies can be a great source of entertainment. Save a few bucks by organizing your own theatre experience at home. For example, if you enjoy Christian movies, you can binge-watch the best Jesus movies on a projector in your backyard or huddle together around your TV set. For your movie snacks, you can get some yummy and flavored ‘movie theatre’ popcorn and candles at the dollar store. Instead of ordering takeout, you can also make your pizza home to enjoy with your favorite drinks. Walking in the park with your family will help you get fresh air and enjoy nature. Always staying indoors can feel suffocating. You can walk in the park or on a family-friendly hiking trail. A walk in nature can help you and your family relax and release tension. Also, walking is good exercise, and it helps strengthen your muscles. It’s best to set a time for these walks, say fifteen to thirty minutes, so you can be intentional about what you do during that period. While you’re walking, catch up with your family members by having a conversation or doing a scavenger hunt with the kids. Museums are exciting, and they offer an excellent learning experience. Exploring one with your family is another budget-friendly activity to consider. It would help if you checked out the museum near you and found out if they have any discounted days. You can enjoy free activities like a treasure hunt and perform some fun tasks. Exploring a museum with family can help children build listening skills and inspire confidence in them. A family game night is a fun and bonding activity you can do. Nothing strengthens a family like healthy competition. You can create teams competing against each other and present an award or gift at the end. While choosing the games for the night, make sure there is an activity for every age. Some games you can play include card games, drawing games, charades and musical chairs.  Image Credit Visits to the zoo can effectively teach your kids how to identify different animals and learn about their needs. It is also a learning avenue for the whole family because you discover new information. You also get to create memories with your family members and let go of stress due to your contact with nature. If your local zoo offers discounted or free family days, consider taking advantage of these deals. Some aquariums also offer free entry for young children.  Families who engage in activities together communicate more effectively and build positive social skills. Having fun with your family can be priceless. That is why they don’t have to be expensive to be meaningful.
